Salzburg Struggles Past Bregenz into ÖFB-Cup Quarter-finals

In the Round of 16 of the UNIQA ÖFB-Cup, Red Bull Salzburg wins 3:2 away at SW Bregenz.

The Salzburgers get off to a perfect start. With their first attack, the "Bulls" quickly combine forward, Konate rounds the keeper and slots home for 1:0 (2').

Vertessen has a chance to extend the lead with a header, but the post prevents the 2:0 (24').

Bregenz Nevertheless Determined

The Vorarlbergers are not deterred and play with heart, pushing forward. The hosts execute a really nice attack; the ball comes from the right side to Omotehara in the middle, and he immediately equalizes for 1:1 (33').

Salzburg is not truly shocked by this; Baidoo has a huge chance to take the lead after a counter-attack (37'). This comes shortly after a quick free-kick. Vertessen cuts inside and finishes unstoppably into the near corner (43').

Salzburg Squanders Big Chances

Just as in the first half, the visitors from Salzburg are very wasteful with their chances. Baidoo comes alone in front of goal after a passing error from Aizawa, but puts the ball over the empty net from 20 meters (51').

But then it happens. Mazurek gets through well on the left and serves Lainer with a good cross at the far post. The veteran doesn't let the chance slip and heads in for 3:1 (58').

However, the Bregenz team doesn't give up and promptly has an answer. After a corner kick, Cecchini gets to the ball and pokes it over the line for 2:3 (60').

Bregenz Almost Levels at 3:3

The strength of the Vorarlbergers is definitely corner kicks. Again after one such, William gets a shot on goal with a volley and just barely misses – almost making it 3:3 (71').

In the closing stages, Lindström and Tabakovic come into the game for Salzburg. The latter has a huge chance to equalize shortly after, but after a square pass from Baidoo, the striker misses the ball in front of an open goal (79').

Shortly before the end, Camara then has the chance to make it 4:2; the Bregenz goalkeeper is out of his goal, Baidoo plays a square pass to Camara. The striker just has to tap it into the empty net, but slips beforehand and misses the chance (90'+2).

However, it remains 3:2 for Salzburg. The visitors could have won much more comfortably here, having carelessly squandered many chances. The Bregenz team, however, can look back on a spirited performance and were not entirely far from an upset.
