Vaso Markovic rules out Serbia after ÖFB debut

"Everything clarified" with Serbia

With his first international cap, a later change of national team is not yet ruled out; such a move only becomes impossible after four competitive appearances. So much for theory.

In practice, however, the die has likely already been cast. Whether one still needs to talk about the Serbian national team? "No, not really. Everything's clarified," says the midfielder.

Only six players were even younger

At the age of 18 years, four months, and 15 days, "Vaso" is currently the youngest debutant in the Ralf Rangnick era.

In the Second Republic, only six younger Austrians - David Alaba, Hans Buzek, Yusuf Demir, Valentino Lazaro, Marcel Sabitzer, and Aleksandar Dragovic - have ever featured in international matches.

"Es ist unglaublich, in so jungen Jahren da dabei zu sein. Davon kann man eigentlich nur träumen."

"I can hardly describe my feelings. It's incredible to be part of this at such a young age. You can only dream of something like this," says the Austria Wien professional.

Two role models in the ÖFB team

The current ÖFB training camp passed "really quickly". "I felt very comfortable, I like the pace of the national team, I like this style of play," explains the youngster.

Markovic is "perfectly suited for our style of play, especially when playing against the ball," Rangnick had explained before the match.

Accordingly, the Favoriten player also chose the right role models within the team: "Xaver and Seiwald! How they work with and against the ball, I can learn a lot from them."

Rapid ascent

The talent's debut is the provisional highlight of a rapid ascent. When he traveled to the U17 World Cup in November 2025, he hadn't even made an appearance for Wiener Austria's second team; less than a year later, he is a senior national team player.

"It all happened incredibly fast, I really didn't expect that," he admits.
