Can Austria develop world stars?

Former ÖFB national team player Florian Klein said that world-class attacking players like Lamine Yamal cannot be produced. "He just emerges."

A player like Erling Haaland could be more specifically nurtured. "But I think that's not the task of an association like the ÖFB, but of the club. Between the ages of eight and 14, everything in the clubs must be focused on technique, dribbling, and combination play. Pressing comes on top of that later."

Krankl then retorted: "Why shouldn't Austria produce a Lamine Yamal? What is the difference between Austria and Spain? That can only be in the training."

"Certain characters were also courted at the World Cup, and they are no longer there. Players like Alaba and Arnautovic have achieved a lot, and the World Cup was the peak of their careers. That's why they had to play, even though it probably wasn't the best choice," the 59-year-old said.

The sporting director question

The ÖFB sporting director personnel matter was also a topic. "I find it very difficult to appoint a sporting director to Ralf Rangnick's side. Anyone who knows Ralf and knows that he wants to make a difference also knows: He doesn't go to someone and tell them to call there, but picks up the phone himself and does it," Hasenhüttl said.

"Ralf Rangnick doesn't need a sporting director because he does everything himself," Krankl noted.
