Screen vs. Ball: Media Literacy in Everyday Family Life
Children are spending more and more time with smartphones, while physical activity is often neglected. How can parents deal with this, and who is responsible for media literacy? Manuel Ortlechner and other guests discuss this in the Drei DigiTalk.
For many Austrians, checking their phone is often the first thing they do in the morning. A look at the numbers shows that almost a third of Austrians report using their phone for two to three hours daily, while a quarter even spend four or five hours a day with their mobile device (Source: Deloitte Smartphone Survey 2025).
The smartphone is therefore not only a daily companion in the lives of many adults but has long since become an integral part of family life. As soon as the first school friends get their own phone, the question arises for their own offspring: When will it be their turn?
A Challenge for Families
Whether a family of athletes or not – parents are faced with the task of teaching their children how to use digital media responsibly and well. But what exactly does that look like? And who else is responsible for developing media literacy – parents, schools, politics, or even companies? At the same time, the question arises: Can sports and outdoor physical activity create a balance to the digital world?
