World Cup hopeful breaks ankle playing football
The Salzburg native is considered one of the country's most promising luge talents, but now he has to take a break due to an unfortunate slip.
Austria's luge team had to cope with a surprising retirement this summer from Olympic silver medalist Jonas Müller.
One person who could benefit from the unexpected retirement and inherit the fourth World Cup starting spot in the singles event is Noah Kallan.
However, the 21-year-old Salzburg native has now suffered a major setback at the worst possible time. As the "Salzburger Nachrichten" report, Kallan sustained a severe injury in recent days – while playing football.
Syndesmosis Ligament Tear and Ankle Fracture
While casually kicking around with his colleagues, Kallan slipped awkwardly and sustained an anterior syndesmosis ligament tear in his right foot as well as a Volkmann fracture, an ankle fracture in the lower part of the tibia.
"It was an unfortunate turn of events," Kallan told the "SN", who despite the severe injury remains optimistic about being able to start at the first World Cup race of the season (on November 28 in Winterberg):
"While a prognosis is difficult, it might just work out that I start the season normally."
