Scherer warns ÖSV: "Promoting mediocrity is not our standard"
Shortly after his departure as General Secretary, the 41-year-old directs an appeal to politicians and outlines an unwelcome scenario.
Christian Scherer is no longer the General Secretary of Ski Austria as of Friday. In spring, the 41-year-old announced his withdrawal, and Jan Überall is his successor.
Scherer reviewed his term in office with the "Kurier". In his view, the ÖSV is "very solid" and one can look to the future "with confidence."
However, there is also cause for concern, as he explained. Although revenue has developed positively, costs have risen enormously in recent years due to numerous crises.
And that could eventually become a problem. Scherer: "If public funding continues to be cut back, even though the government paper commits to the ski nation, it will eventually impact substance and quality."
Alpine Skiing, Ski Jumping - and what else?
Should costs continue to rise, it will be necessary to consider whether funding all disciplines – as is currently the case – is still possible. The association cannot afford cuts in Alpine skiing. Apart from Alpine and ski jumping, all disciplines are loss-making.
In any case, it is not the ambition of the ÖSV to maintain a discipline "and only promote mediocrity."
