Last season's giant slalom dominator is only on the course for a good half minute in the first World Cup race of the season.

This is certainly not how Julia Scheib envisioned the start of the new Ski World Cup season!

The 28-year-old Styrian was the big favorite for victory in the first race of the season in Sölden, but the Austrian failed to finish the first run.

Starting with bib number two, Scheib put in a strong run, already more than six tenths ahead of Alice Robinson at the second intermediate time - but then came the fatal error on the steep slope: Scheib was lifted off the ground, took a heavy fall, and slid towards the net, but did not hit it.

After a few anxious seconds, however, Scheib was able to get up on her own and ski down to the finish area independently.

A major injury was likely avoided, but so was the hoped-for repeat of her 2025 Sölden victory.
