For giant slalom specialist Thea Louise Stjernesund, the new Ski World Cup season already kicks off on October 24. At the Rettenbachferner in Sölden, the Norwegian will be competing for World Cup points for the first time this season.

It's a kind of home race for Stjernesund, who has now relocated her main residence to Austria with her boyfriend Timon Haugan. The two Norwegians have moved to Salzburg and plan to spend several years there.

This is how Stjernesund and Haugan explain their move >>>

Salzburg base is meant to help

"Of course, there aren't too many days together in winter," Stjernesund qualifies the situation in an interview with "welovesnow". "We'll see each other in Sölden and probably not again until the end of December."

Nevertheless, the shared base in Salzburg should help them "to spend a few days together in between."

German must get better - "No more excuses!"

Although she now lives in Austria, her German language skills still have a lot of catching up to do, as the 29-year-old explains. She rates her own level as "very bad".

"I've already given some very questionable German interviews because I really wanted to try. But Duolingo only takes you so far," says Stjernesund. "But since I'm now living in Austria during the season, I simply have to learn it. I have no more excuses!"

Stjernesund never wanted to be with a skier

Incidentally, Stjernesund could never have imagined having a relationship with another professional skier – but now she's glad it turned out that way.

"In the past, I was always very skeptical and said: 'I would never be with a skier because you want to think about something else at home.' But at the same time, there's no one who understands you better than Timon. I don't have to explain everything; he knows the feeling – whether things are going badly or well."
