Timon Haugan must once again scale back his preparations for the upcoming winter.

The 29-year-old technical specialist is once again plagued by persistent back problems this summer.

Speaking to the NTB news agency, the Norwegian explained that he is now feeling better after a few difficult weeks. "I have actually spent the summer getting my back in order," said Haugan.

Strong Last Season Despite Problems

The slalom specialist already proved last winter that he can perform at his peak despite physical ailments.

At that time, despite intermittent pain, he clinched two World Cup victories and narrowly missed the medals at the Olympic Games, finishing fourth by just 29 hundredths of a second.

Setback During Strength Training

An incident during summer training has now caused another setback. Haugan admitted that he simply acted a bit too eagerly during a session in the weight room.

"I added a few extra kilos and then got a little jolt in my back again. The past two weeks have been quieter to get my back under control. That's succeeding now," explained the Van Deer pilot.

Therefore, the athlete from Oppdal only played a supporting role this time in the Norwegian team's traditional "Ironman test" at the Olympiatoppen training center.

Focus on Ten-Year Anniversary and World Championships in Crans-Montana

Despite the setback, the plan for the upcoming season remains unchanged. Haugan is targeting his tenth World Cup season and, following his third-place finishes (2024, 2025) as well as fifth place last season, is once again aiming for a top spot in the Slalom World Cup.

Also at the upcoming World Championships in Crans-Montana, the Norwegian is considered among the top favorites in his premier discipline.

Fortunately, the back injury has no impact on the further preparation plans: Haugan and the Norwegian team will travel as planned for a six-week overseas training camp to New Zealand.
