Generational Clash Victory: Tagger Leaves Williams No Chance
The young Austrian leaves nothing to chance in Guangzhou against the American, who is almost 30 years her senior.
Lilli Tagger confidently reached the second round of the WTA 250 tournament in Guangzhou, China.
The ÖTV ace confidently defeated US legend Venus Williams (WTA 599) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, in her opening match.
The 46-year-old Williams, who won six of her seven Grand Slam titles before Tagger was born, had little chance, especially against the 18-year-old Austrian's serve.
Perfect Start
The match started perfectly for Tagger. She broke her opponent in the very first game. The subsequent games were then confidently won by the respective server.
Only at 4-2 did Tagger get another break chance, and once again, she broke her opponent's serve. She then confidently served out the set.
Stays Composed
Set two again started with a break for the East Tyrolean. Tagger then had another chance to break her opponent's serve, but the 18-year-old squandered six break points.
Nevertheless, Tagger remained composed. She secured another break at 4-2 and served out the match after 1 hour and 15 minutes of play.
In the Round of 16, the 34-year-old Pole Magda Linette (WTA 71) awaits.
