Rodionov Clearly Prevails in All-Austrian Duel

For Joel Schwärzler, the Generali Open in Kitzbühel once again ends in the first round. The 20-year-old from Vorarlberg had to concede defeat to his compatriot Jurij Rodionov with a score of 4:6, 2:6 after 1 hour and 18 minutes.

Schwärzler got off to a better start and earned a break point already in his opponent's first service game, but he couldn't convert it.

Subsequently, both players held their serve comfortably for a long time, before Rodionov converted his first break opportunity at 3:3. The lead was ultimately enough for the qualifier to win the set.

Schwärzler Without a Chance

In the second set, Schwärzler also initially kept pace well, but at 40:0 in his second service game, he squandered a comfortable advantage and had to give up his serve, making it 1:2. Shortly after, Rodionov followed up with another break, thus creating an early decisive advantage.

The 27-year-old presented himself as more composed in the decisive moments, kept his unforced error count low, and didn't allow Schwärzler back into the match. After 1 hour and 18 minutes, Rodionov converted his first match point to win 6:4, 6:2.

In the round of 16, he will now face the Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry, seeded number four, against whom Rodionov is still undefeated on clay.
