Russell frustrated after crash: "We would have won the Sprint"
The Mercedes driver took the lead at the start, but threw away the possible victory with a mistake.
George Russell laments his mistake in the Singapore Sprint!
The Mercedes driver got off to a strong start and initially pulled past pole-setter Max Verstappen. However, towards the end of the first lap, the race ended prematurely for the Briton: Russell lost control of his car and crashed into the wall at the start/finish line.
In an ORF interview after the Sprint, the 28-year-old took the blame and apologized to his team. At the same time, Russell is convinced that he would have won without the mistake.
"It was my mistake"
When asked how the costly slip-up could have happened after such a strong start, Russell had clear words.
"It was my mistake. I went into the corner too fast and went too wide. Then I touched the white line and from that moment on, I was off," the Mercedes driver explained self-critically.
The 28-year-old's disappointment is understandably great. "I'm very sad, of course. Sorry to the team, I believe we would have won the Sprint," Russell said.
Difficult weekend continues
For Russell, a difficult weekend in Singapore thus continues. It was already clear before the Sprint that the Briton would have to start Sunday's Grand Prix from the back of the field.
Russell also continues to lose ground in the drivers' world championship standings. The gap to his teammate Kimi Antonelli is now a massive 89 points. With seven races remaining, only 175 points are left to be awarded.
On Saturday in Singapore, the qualifying session, which is meaningless for Russell, is still scheduled. Q1 starts at 3:30 PM (in the LIVE ticker).
