Historic! McDavid Breaks Over 40-Year-Old Gretzky Record
The Oilers superstar records five points in a shootout victory against Stanley Cup champions Carolina and continues his incredible start to the season.
Connor McDavid has once again made NHL history.
With two goals and three assists in the Edmonton Oilers' 6-5 shootout victory over defending champions Carolina Hurricanes, the Canadian superstar has boosted his tally to 31 points in ten games.
"It's just unbelievable," says teammate Leon Draisaitl. "In my opinion, he might be the best player ever. It's a joy to be on the ice with him and a joy to learn from him every day. He deserves everything."
McDavid in Illustrious Company
Before McDavid, only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux (three times), and Mike Bossy recorded 30 or more points in their first ten NHL games of a season.
Gretzky achieved this in the 1984/85 season wearing the Oilers jersey, scoring exactly 30 points. With this, the 29-year-old has broken the ice hockey legend's over 40-year-old record.
The all-time record is held by Lemieux with 37 points in the first ten games of the 1988/89 season. McDavid was able to snatch another best mark from "Super Mario": that for the most assists in ten games – McDavid managed 23, Lemieux "only" 21.
