Linz Decides Thriller Against Graz in Penalty Shootout
Linz and Graz engaged in an intense duel with chances on both sides. The game remained open until the final phase, creating excitement in the Linz AG Eisarena.
In the 7th round of the win2day ICE Hockey League, Steinbach Black Wings Linz met the reigning champions Moser Medical Graz99ers. After 60 minutes, the score was 2:2, with Linz prevailing in the penalty shootout.
The game started at a high tempo with chances on both sides. Graz showed strong forechecking and took a 1-0 lead after six minutes through former Linz player Nico Feldner. However, Linz quickly responded: Niklas Würschl scored the equalizer in the 11th minute.
The game remained intense and physical. After an even first period, the teams went into the locker rooms with a draw.
Second Period Remains Contested
Trenton Bliss extended the lead to 2-1 in the 24th minute with a follow-up shot. Shortly after, Graz goalie Nicolas Wieser made a strong save against Brian Lebler, preventing another goal. Both teams continued their high-tempo, physical battle.
The final period grew increasingly heated. Following a hard check, an altercation broke out between David Maier and Stefan Gaffal. Both received five-minute penalties for fighting. The intensity on the ice continued until Graz scored the equalizer just seconds before the end: Nick Swaney made it 2-2. The 99ers had previously pulled their goalie, forcing overtime.
No Overtime Goal Despite Linz Power Play
The decision thus had to come down to a penalty shootout. There, Linz kept their composure: Knott converted, sealing the home victory for the Black Wings.
Linz thus secured two points, while Graz took one. Both teams remained in the upper half of the standings after the 7th round.
