Argentina's Lautaro Martinez: "I dreamed of this goal"

The Inter captain shot the "Albiceleste" to victory against England and into the World Cup final. Fans and players are now longing for the fourth star.

Argentina can keep singing!

"For Diego" and "for Leo's last (World Cup, Ed.)" says the song "La Cuarta Estrella". Fans and players of the "Albiceleste" yearn for the "fourth star" and with the 2-1 victory over England on Wednesday, they have come one big step closer to it.

The Argentinian national team has also won its sixth World Cup semi-final in history and is thus in the final for the second time in a row. On Sunday, they will face the "Furia Roja" (here in the LIVE ticker >>>).

It is the very first final between world and South American champions Argentina and European champions Spain.

Messi extends assist record

Veteran star Lionel Messi once again played a key role in the semi-final thriller and provided the assists for the comeback goals by Enzo Fernandez (85th) and Lautaro Martinez (90th+2).

The 39-year-old now has twelve World Cup assists, ten of which he recorded in the knockout stage. No other player since 1966 (start of detailed data collection) has achieved more than eight assists in a World Cup final tournament.

England had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon (55th), but after the 1-0, the "Three Lions" sat back.

England's coach Thomas Tuchel implemented a back five, and yet the "Albiceleste's" cross-fireworks continued, allowing the reigning world champion to swing the momentum in their favor.

"We are unique"

"I'm speechless, really. What joy for our country. I said the other day: This team keeps surprising me," said Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni, who now has the chance for his second World Cup title, after the triumph.

"And I tell you quite honestly: We will try to win, we will leave everything on the pitch – but what these players show here can hardly be put into words. It's incredible. We are unique, truly. And that's not arrogance, it comes from the heart. We are unique. The fans carried us to victory today, for that I am grateful."

Martinez' premonition

The joy was also immense for substitute and match-winner Lautaro Martinez after reaching the final. The Inter Milan captain even had a premonition, as he revealed after the victory.

"I dreamed of this goal. I told Alexis [Mac Allister] that I would score. And I told Facu Medina on the bench that I would come in and decide the game. And then the ball came straight to me," said the striker, who now has 40 national team goals.

"Enzo scored a great goal – and now that I've calmed down a bit, I can say: This team keeps showing what it's made of."

The Argentinian fairy tale thus continues and could find a happy ending on Sunday.
