Fight Remains Unrewarded! Austria Narrowly Loses to Chelsea

Narrow defeat for FK Austria Wien Women in their UEFA Women's Champions League debut!

The Violets narrowly lost 0-1 away to English top club FC Chelsea on the first matchday of the group stage.

The class difference was clearly visible especially at the beginning of the first half, during which the hosts also scored the opening goal. Wieke Kaptein found the back of the net in the eleventh minute.

However, the Austrian women did not give up and grew increasingly courageous against the 2021 Champions League finalists. Before the break, there were two good opportunities from Kirchberger-Prohaska and a shot by Schöffel, but they went into the locker room with a narrow deficit.

Austria Close to Equalizing

After the break, the Viennese picked up where they left off. The Austrian women had several corners, but couldn't capitalize on them.

Goalkeeper Jasmin Pal was on hand during dangerous transitional situations, keeping her team in the game. In the 62nd minute, the Violets had another good chance, but Modesta Uka was denied by keeper Livia Peng.

The Violets continued to throw everything forward, and in the 76th minute, another effort from Uka hit the post. The Viennese tried everything, but in the end, their efforts for an equalizer went unrewarded.

Thus, they narrowly missed out on their first point in the opener. But the next opportunity will come soon: next Thursday (October 1), they will host Inter Milan at home.
