"It would be a marquee signing," sources within SK Austria Klagenfurt said back in September.

They were referring to attempts to bring Stefan Hierländer out of retirement and sign him in the Regionalliga.

Austria Klagenfurt president Helmut Kaltenegger confirmed to "Krone": "That's true. I wanted to sign him."

The Klagenfurt club had pushed hard for the 35-year-old midfielder, who retired last summer – but the deal will not go through after all. "Unfortunately, he turned us down," Kaltenegger explained to "Krone".

Hierländer currently assistant coach at Sturm II

For Hierländer, it would have been a return to his roots. The Carinthia native played for AKA Kärnten during his youth days, as well as for Austria Kärnten from 2008 to 2010.

Instead, the former SK Sturm Graz captain will continue to focus on his role at Sturm II, where he has been serving as assistant coach since July.

Meanwhile, for Austria Klagenfurt, currently third in the Regionalliga Süd, the search for high-profile signings continues.

Aydin targeted, Spiridonovic set to join

"We are working on signing Okan Aydin," Kaltenegger confirmed. The 32-year-old attacking player currently plays for ASKÖ Oedt.

In addition, 33-year-old Srdjan Spiridonovic will move to Klagenfurt from Serbian second-division side FK Smederevo 1924. "He is definitely coming," said Kaltenegger.
