New FIFA President? UEFA Chief Ceferin Rules Himself Out
The current UEFA boss does not want to succeed Infantino and explains his reasons in a podcast.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin rules out a candidacy for the office of FIFA President.
The 58-year-old has repeatedly expressed criticism of FIFA boss Gianni Infantino in recent weeks following the failed investor deal.
"My credibility is much greater if I have no interest in this position," the Slovenian explains in "The Rest Is Politics" podcast.
FIFA Elections in March 2027
For next year's FIFA election, he sees two possible scenarios:
"The first possibility is that he realises he doesn't have the support," Ceferin says about Infantino. "The other possibility is that he runs in the election. In that case, in my opinion, we will put forward an opposing candidate. Who that will be, I don't know yet."
Ceferin's term as UEFA President ends in 2027.
Possible Opposing Candidate from Canada
The election for FIFA President will take place in March 2027 in Rabat.
According to consistent media reports, in addition to a European opposing candidate, CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani from Canada could also run against Infantino.
