Barca captain on verge of surprise move to Premier League
The centre-back could leave the Catalans despite a contract until 2031. A loan move to an English top club is on the cards.
Is Captain Roland Araujo leaving FC Barcelona?
According to several media outlets – including "Sky" and "Mundo Deportivo" – the centre-back is reportedly on the verge of a move to Liverpool FC. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano also confirms these reports.
As reported by the Italian, the deal is said to be already finalised, and the necessary documents are expected to be signed on Saturday.
Araujo is initially set to join the "Reds" on loan, who are said to have secured a purchase option for the 27-year-old at an undisclosed sum. At the Premier League top club, the defender is expected to replace Ibrahima Konate, who departed for Real Madrid.
Araujo recently only a substitute
Under Hansi Flick, Araujo wears the captain's armband following Marc-André ter Stegen's departure to Ajax Amsterdam (More info>>>), but despite his contract until 2031, he does not hold a particularly important sporting role.
The Uruguay international has had a difficult season. In December, Araujo asked FC Barcelona for a several-week break due to mental health problems, which was granted. This was preceded by renewed fierce criticism from his own fanbase.
Even before and after that, Araujo was not part of the Catalans' starting XI. In central defence, he currently has Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, and Gerard Martín ahead of him. Now, a fresh start awaits him in Liverpool.
