Italy's top flight is historically known for its defensive approaches. The current season counters this popular perception.
Among fans, Serie A still often has a reputation for being a defensively-minded league.
Even if this may still be in its DNA: Objectively speaking, this has changed significantly in the last 20 years. Three of the last six seasons, measured by goals per game, ranked among the top 10 highest-scoring Serie A seasons.
This trend is particularly evident in the current season.
It took no less than 54 league matches before a game ended 0-0 for the first time: Como and AS Roma played out a goalless draw on Sunday in matchday six. The last time it took so long for the season's first 0-0 was almost 80 (!) years ago.
In the 1949/50 season, it was matchday seven when AC Milan and Lazio Rom drew 0-0 for the first time at San Siro. That season also saw the record goal average, which stands to this day: 3.33 goals were scored on average per game.
In the current season, the league has an average of 2.9. If this is maintained, it would be the seventh-best season in history in this regard.
