FC Bayern: This is apparently what's holding up Freund's extension
A majority within the club is reportedly in favor of extending the 49-year-old Austrian's contract. The ball is apparently in his court:
Christoph Freund is entering his final contract year at FC Bayern Munich.
His tenure as sporting director so far – with the exception of the trophy-less first season (2023/24) – has been quite successful. In the last two seasons, the Munich side claimed a total of five titles.
"No Rush"
Not only for this reason is Freund said to enjoy great trust within the supervisory board and executive board of the German record champion, as reported by the "Abendzeitung München". There is reportedly a clear majority in favor of an extension.
Freund recently told "Krone": "I feel extremely comfortable in Munich, I really enjoy the work, also with our team. But I'm in no rush."
According to the Bavarian media outlet, the Austrian is still in a phase of deliberation. One or two open questions reportedly need to be clarified beforehand.
More Power?
One of the points: The future structure of the scouting department. Like Freund, chief scout Nils Schmadtke is also only under contract until 2027. Currently, an extension for the 37-year-old German seems rather unlikely.
Should Schmadtke depart, Freund could get the chance to re-fill the important chief scout position and put his own stamp on it. The Salzburg native's influence in Munich has reportedly already expanded in recent months.
Furthermore, before an extension, it needs to be defined what the future role and the structures around Freund's area of responsibility will look like.
