After the narrow semi-final exit in 2025/26, the strategy for FC Bayern Munich in the Champions League is clear - at least according to sporting director Christoph Freund.
"I won't beat around the bush - that (the Champions League title, editor's note) is a huge goal for us," he said in an interview with "Krone". The Munich side only failed in the semi-final against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain (5:6 after both legs).
"It would be a dream"
Freund also knows, however, that everything has to come together for a big success in the Champions League.
"It would be a dream, however, if we could bring the trophy to Munich. I have been here in Munich for three years now and have reached the semi-finals twice. (...) A win would therefore be of great significance," said the 49-year-old.
Hats off to LASK
After a year without a representative from the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, LASK is once again an Austrian club participating this season - to Freund's delight. "I am very pleased for Austrian football that we have a team participating again."
The Linz club's first-time Champions League participation is "well-deserved" in the eyes of the Bayern manager. "Because I saw the return leg against Celtic," Freund explains: "LASK has been playing very good football since Didi arrived. For that, I have to take my hat off – chapeau."
For this reason, the Salzburg native also believes LASK can secure "some points" in the group stage.
A clear plan in Salzburg
Freund not only observed the Linz club's Champions League qualifier, but he also watched his former club FC Red Bull Salzburg in their match against Wiener Austria - even in the stadium.
"They seem much more settled than in previous years and have more joy in playing again," Freund recognizes a positive development and a "clear plan" at the "Bulls."
Furthermore, he likes the mix of many talents ("I saw some interesting young players") and a few experienced players. "It looks like a good mix."
That's why Freund sees precisely these two clubs as the hottest candidates in the Bundesliga title race: "For me, these are the title contenders, who also play really good football and score many goals."
