Wagner Debut Goes Wrong! Hannover Still in Crisis
The ex-Bayern striker suffers a sobering away defeat in his debut as Hannover 96's coach.
Sandro Wagner got off to a false start in his debut as head coach of Hannover 96.
On Sunday, the Lower Saxony club lost 3-0 to 1. FC Magdeburg in the 2. German Bundesliga.
Hannover got off to an exceptionally bad start. As early as the third minute, a slapstick own goal gave the hosts the lead. Franz Roggow shot the ball against Magdeburg's Moritz-Broni Kwarteng, and it ricocheted off his foot into the Hannover goal (3').
Magdeburg Capitalizes on Hannover's Errors
Subsequently, the visitors composed themselves and created chances, particularly from set pieces. However, instead of an equalizer, Magdeburg scored again: After a shot from Ben Zukowski, Hannover keeper Leo Weinkauf could only parry the ball forward. Emmanuel Iyoha pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0 (30').
After that, Hannover increasingly struggled. Weinkauf made several saves to prevent an even larger deficit before halftime.
Even after the break, the visitors failed to mount a comeback. Austrian legionnaire Benedikt Pichler came into the game in the 64th minute but couldn't bring about a decisive turning point.
Instead, Zukowski sealed the 3-0 victory on the other side (85').
Wagner had taken over as coach from Christian Titz, who had to leave after only four points from the first five rounds. With seven points, Hannover is now in twelfth place. Magdeburg has 13 points and moves up to fourth in the table.
Darmstadt Hands Over the Red Lantern
In the parallel match, SV Darmstadt 98 celebrated a 3-1 home victory against Energie Cottbus. Justin Butler gave the promoted side the lead as early as the fourth minute, and Noah Weißhaupt equalized for the "Lilies" (36').
Vukotic (77') and Lührs (88') finally secured the second season win for Darmstadt, who thus passed the "red lantern" (bottom spot) to Holstein Kiel.
Late Equalizer in Osnabrück
Dynamo Dresden led VfL Osnabrück 1-0 for a long time but ultimately had to settle for a draw. Niklas Hauptmann scored what appeared to be the winning goal for the visitors in the 38th minute. However, after a corner, Fabinski managed a late equalizer (87').
Austrian legionnaire Ahmet Muhamedbegovic came into the game for Dresden immediately after the equalizer, making a brief appearance.
