New Sporting Director for Liverpool
Julian Ward takes up the post for the second time, replacing Richard Hughes.
Liverpool FC on Saturday appointed Julian Ward as their new sporting director. He succeeds Richard Hughes, who is moving to Saudi club Al-Hilal.
Ward was previously sporting director of the Premier League club in the 2022/23 season and most recently technical director of Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
"The knowledge and expertise he brings will only further enhance our football operations while ensuring Andoni (Iraola, ed. note) receives the support he needs to continue to make such a positive impact as head coach," FSG president Mike Gordon said in the club's statement.
Associated with the club since 2012
Ward himself said: "This is an exciting time for Liverpool – on and off the pitch – where change and opportunity go hand in hand, but at the same time, the culture, values, and principles that have long defined the club remain as strong as ever."
Ward originally joined Liverpool in 2012 and worked in scouting, recruitment, and player strategy development.
Hughes' departure is the latest in a series of high-profile executives to leave the club in recent months. Michael Edwards had previously departed as CEO of Football for Liverpool owners FSG.
