Bacher and Lyon Celebrate Narrow Victory Against Crystal Palace
In an exciting match, the French manage to hold on for the win. Sunderland, however, avoids embarrassment against a second-division side.
Felix Bacher can also celebrate a full success in his second European competition match.
His team Olympique Lyon wins 3-2 at home against Crystal Palace on the second matchday of the UEFA Europa League.
Lyon takes an early lead. From a corner, Bacher narrowly misses the ball with a header, but the ball lands right at the feet of former Bayern player Corentin Tolisso. He smashes the ball into the net from close range (8').
Lyon remains dominant even after that. Ernest Nuamah extends the lead for the French just before halftime after an assist from former LASK player Keito Nakamura (45'+2).
Lyon Withstands Palace's Late Offensive
In the second half, another quick goal comes from a corner. This time, however, it's the Londoners who score. Spanish World Champion Yeremy Pino finishes a short pass from Adam Wharton to pull a goal back (51').
Crystal Palace thus gets better and better into the game. But as the Londoners push for the equalizer, Lyon extends their lead to 3-1 through Pavel Sulc (76').
After Crystal Palace pulls another goal back through Daichi Kamada in the 82nd minute, the English throw everything forward in the final phase. But the defense, marshaled by the strong Bacher who plays the full 90 minutes, can withstand the pressure and secure the win.
Sunderland Avoids Embarrassment
AFC Sunderland avoids a real embarrassment. The English had to fight hard against Portuguese second-division side SC Uniao Torreense, but ultimately secured a 2-1 away win.
Volnei scores the opener for the Portuguese sensational cup winner in the first half (37'). In the second half, however, the English manage to turn the game around with goals from Jules Ahoka (67') and Noah Sadiki (90'+3).
Kevin Danso, like many other regular players, was only on the bench for Sunderland.
Clear Victory for Leverkusen
Bayer 04 Leverkusen, on the other hand, secures a clear away victory.
The Werkself wins 4-0 away against Lech Posen thanks to goals from Patrik Schick (29', 41'), Malik Tillman (32'), and Ibrahim Maza (89').
Union Saint-Gilloise secures a 1-1 home draw against Real Sociedad without the suspended Raul Florucz.
