Louis van Gaal managed the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, months before he announced his prostate cancer diagnosis.

After the major tournament, he retired from coaching due to the illness. The coaching legend has now been cancer-free for over a year.

And even at 74, he still hasn't had enough of football. According to "De Telegraaf", the coaching legend has offered himself as the Netherlands national team coach after Ronald Koeman's departure.

Record of former Salzburg coach would be in jeopardy

Van Gaal has already been national team coach of his home country three times. He celebrated his greatest success as national coach in 2014 with a bronze medal at the World Cup in Brazil. Previously, he was eliminated in the semi-finals against then-vice world champions Argentina only after a penalty shootout.

Should van Gaal actually lead the Netherlands to Euro 2028, an age record would also be broken. The oldest European Championship coach of all time is former Salzburg coach Giovanni Trapattoni. The Italian managed Ireland at 73 years and 85 days in 2012 during the group stage match against Croatia.

Van Gaal, who turns 75 this week, would be 76 years old at Euro 2028.
