First CL win since 2008! Fenerbahce shocks Liverpool
Fenerbahce wins a UEFA Champions League match for the first time since 2008.
On the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League group stage, Fenerbahce surprises Liverpool with a 3-2 victory, securing three points.
From the outset, the "Reds" aimed to leave no doubt as to who the favorite of the match was. In the fourth minute, Munoz already had a double chance. Star goalkeeper Ederson was able to prevent a goal for now.
In the 25th minute, Nyoni put the away team in the lead. Szoboszlai delivered a cross into the penalty area that wasn't perfectly cleared. Nyoni sensed the opportunity and shot from 15 meters. The ball was deflected, making it unstoppable for Ederson.
Instant Impact
Fenerbahce responded promptly. Kahveci met a low cross from the side, which he hit against the crossbar from five meters out. Just three minutes later, the equalizer followed. Greenwood's free-kick was initially too low, but as Jacquet turned away in the wall, this ball was also deflected, making it unstoppable for the goalkeeper.
Barcola almost scored the next goal with a header but missed by mere centimeters (37').
However, Fenerbahce did not shy away and showed several offensive drives since the equalizer. The biggest chance to take the lead in the first half once again fell to Greenwood, but he was denied by Alisson in Liverpool's goal.
Fenerbahce Efficient
After the break, Liverpool initially took control again. Barcola tried a shot from the left side towards the near post, but Ederson saved. The Brazilian goalkeeper also made a save from the subsequent corner.
Liverpool's coach Iraola proved to have a golden touch. Three minutes after his substitution, Gakpo delivered an awkward cross into Fenerbahce's penalty area, where Isak, who had also just been substituted in, headed it in from close range to make it 2-1.
But once again, the Turks managed to equalize. Kante poked the ball into the penalty area, but instead of clearing it, Gakpo headed it backwards, inadvertently perfectly to Brown, who tapped it in from close range to make it 2-2 (73').
Muriqi Ignites the Stadium
The Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium erupted completely a few minutes later, as Muriqi, following a cross from Brown, won an aerial duel against three Liverpool defenders and precisely headed it in for 3-2 (79').
With no more goals scored, Fenerbahce celebrates their first Champions League victory since 2008.
The Turkish club promptly celebrates this success under coach Dirk Kuyt, who himself played for Liverpool for six years. Fenerbahce is now fully back in the race for the top 24 in the Champions League group stage.
