Last-Minute Stunner! Real Madrid avoids embarrassment against AEK Athens
The "Royals" only lived up to their favorites tag late in Athens. A wonder goal ultimately sealed the decision.
Real Madrid narrowly avoided a slip-up on the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 league phase against AEK Athens.
The "Royals" won 3-2 against AEK Athens on Wednesday evening in Athens thanks to a last-minute goal.
Greeks with a Dream Start
The hosts started strong and set the course for an upset early on – Aboubakary Koita scored to make it 1-0 (12th minute) after an assist from ex-Real striker Luka Jovic.
Real, however, soon found a fitting reply, with Jude Bellingham scoring an impressive backheel goal in the 32nd minute. A few minutes earlier, the Briton had already scored from an offside position.
The visitors then largely took control, creating clear-cut chances through Vini Jr., Militao, Cucurella, and Mbappe.
Valverde's Last-Minute Heroics
In the final phase, however, it was the Greeks who shocked the overwhelming favorites – Koita provided the assist this time, and left-back Pilios scored from close range to make it a sensational 2-1 (75th minute).
Once again, their joy was short-lived. Mbappe converted a low cross from Dumfries three minutes later to level the score at 2-2 (78th minute).
Until the 92nd minute, everything pointed to a respectable draw for the underdog, but then Real showed their strength very late. Federico Valverde secured the decision and the 3-2 final score with a magnificent shot from around 30 meters.
Real Madrid secured their fourth win in their fourth game, while AEK suffered their third defeat in their fourth game.
