The format of the 2026/27 season:
For the third time since its introduction in 2024, the new Champions League format will be played in the upcoming season. All 36 teams will be in a single large table during the league phase. Each team plays eight matches in this league phase, four at home and four away.
Accordingly, no groups will be drawn during the draw in Nyon, but rather pairings. The clubs are divided into four pots and will face two teams from each pot during the league phase.
At the end of the league phase, the top eight teams will directly advance to the Round of 16. Teams placed nine to 24 will play in a knockout playoff round for the remaining Round of 16 tickets. For the last twelve teams, the European season is over. There will be no relegation to the Europa League or Conference League.
Final in Madrid
Originally, the final was scheduled for June 5 in Milan. However, as the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium is being renovated and the city of Milan could not guarantee timely completion, UEFA has decided to move the final to Madrid.
Specifically, the final will take place at the Estadio Metropolitano. The home ground of Atletico Madrid will host the UEFA Champions League final for the second time since its opening in 2017, after 2019.
Where will the Champions League 2026/27 be broadcast?
Before the TV rights are reallocated in a year and DAZN broadcasts almost all matches from 2027/28, this season can still be followed as usual.
In Austria, Sky broadcasts almost all matches of the Champions League 2026/27 live. The top match on Wednesday chosen by Canal+ will not be broadcast on Sky and can only be seen on Canal+. No match will be shown on free-to-air TV this season.
