Deserved Win! Ried Intensifies Austria Crisis
The Violets even take the lead in Ried, but Stephan Helm's team still travels home without a point.
Wiener Austria continues to slide further into crisis.
In the ninth round of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, the Violets lose 2:3 to SV Ried. For the team from Innviertel, it's their third consecutive victory, which sees Mario Despotovic's side climb to fifth place in the table for now.
The two teams feel each other out in the opening minutes; Sanel Saljic forces a save from Andreas Leitner after 12 minutes, while at the other end, Evan Aisowieren appears alone in front of Samuel Sahin-Radlinger, who manages to clear in the nick of time (13.).
After just over a quarter of an hour, the Violets take the lead with a spectacular goal: Johannes Eggestein cuts in from the left, shoots from an inside-left position about 20 meters from goal, and scores his first goal of the season to give Austria the lead (18.).
Ried Turns the Game Around - Austria Equalizer Disallowed
However, the violet celebration doesn't last long, as the hosts turn the game around within a few minutes.
First, Stefan Schwab is on hand to head in the equalizer from a pinpoint cross by Martin Rasner (23.), then Philipp Pomer scores a dream goal himself from a short-taken free-kick to give Ried the lead (29.).
Shortly before the break, Austria seemingly equalize: Ibrahim Buhari pushes the ball over the line after a sharp cross from the right side, but he was in an offside position when the ball was played (44.).
Rasner Has 3:1 Chance - Markovic Misses Equalizer
After the change of ends, Ried immediately get another huge chance: Jaedin Rhodes beats Reinhold Ranftl and enters the penalty area, but Rasner fails to put his pass into the goal from about five meters out (48.).
While Leitner subsequently makes a save from an Eggestein shot at the other end (51.), Sahin-Radlinger has to defuse a deflected cross from Pomer with his leg (54.).
After just over an hour, Vasilje Markovic has the equalizer at his feet, but he puts the ball wide of the left post from close range after a Fischer cross, while falling (63.).
Kiese Thelin Decides the Game from the Spot
In the final phase, Austria has two chances to make it 2:2, before the hosts decide the game in their favor.
First, Pomer has to clear off the line (77.), shortly after, Eggestein gets a header from a set-piece, but it only hits the crossbar (80.).
The decision comes two minutes later: Nnodim brings Bajic down in the penalty area, and Isaack Kiese Thelin coolly converts the ensuing penalty to make it 3:1 for the Upper Austrians (82.).
In injury time, the Violets pull one back through Eggestein, but it comes too late (90.+3).
