Lustenau surprises: "Outstanding reaction after the drubbings"
Austria Lustenau kicks Sturm Graz out of the ÖFB Cup. For the Vorarlbergers, this success after difficult weeks is balm for the footballing soul.
This was not necessarily expected. Austria Lustenau kicks favored SK Sturm Graz out of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup in the round of 16 with a 3:2 victory.
Lenn Jastremski with a brace and Dominik Weixelbraun scored the goals for the Vorarlbergers, who celebrated their first ever victory against Sturm.
"I am very happy – about the result, about advancing, but also about how the team presented itself today," coach Markus Mader cheers on "ORF".
"After the drubbings we've received in the last few rounds, this was an outstanding reaction. I am proud of the team," said the coach.
This was Lustenau's recipe for success
Things had not been going well for Lustenau in the Bundesliga in recent weeks; all of their last three games were lost. Just last weekend, they suffered a 1:5 thrashing against Rapid.
What went better against Sturm? "We were significantly more aggressive; we wanted to be active immediately. We wanted to press them high and create danger with our transition plays, which we did very well. We were solid at the back except for one mistake. Thanks to our compact style of play, the opponent didn't really find solutions," Mader explains.
Brace-scorer Jastremski: "We left our hearts on the pitch"
From the Vorarlbergers' perspective, the man of the match was Lenn Jastremski, who scored two goals and assisted one.
The 25-year-old German's relief after the game was palpable: "The victory feels really good, it feels awesome. Especially after the tough weeks, this was balm for the soul, that we could finally reward ourselves with a win."
Similar to Mader, Jastremski names the on-pitch aggression as the key to success. "We didn't hide and didn't drop deep. We were simply ONE team and pressed the whole time, leaving our hearts on the pitch."
The deserved victory against Sturm should now give the Vorarlbergers a boost for the upcoming tasks in the Bundesliga. A tough away game in Salzburg already awaits them on Sunday.
"The last games were brutally tough. The victory should simply inspire us for the next matches," says Jastremski.
