Round of 16 instead of the final! Sturm Graz surprisingly crashed out of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup early, losing 2-3 to Austria Lustenau.

The Styrians have thus been eliminated before the quarter-finals for the first time in five years.

"It really hurts," said head coach Fabio Ingolitsch, who was in the stands due to his suspension, to "ORF". "It's a bitter blow for us because it was a big season goal. We also know its importance to the club and the fans. We fell short for them today. I'm incredibly sorry for everyone involved."

Ingolitsch: "That's why we lost"

After just 26 minutes, the Graz team was 0-2 down after goals from Lenn Jastremski and Dominik Weixelbraun. Only then did the Styrians, weakened by absences, become more active. The goal to narrow the deficit came from a set piece: Petar Petrovic headed it in.

After the break, Lustenau were back in the game, Sturm showed too little imagination in possession and was caught cold by a counter-attack – Jastremski bagged a brace.

Even after that, the visitors, coached by assistant coach Christoph Witamwas, lacked creativity, until a long ball provided a remedy. After a long clearance from Paul Koller, Seidl appeared alone in front of goal and gave Sturm hope once more.

Du verlierst so ein Spiel, wenn du von Anfang an nicht die richtige Energie und Einstellung zum Spiel hast.

Petrovic squandered the best chance for a 3-3 equalizer when he blasted the ball over the bar from five yards out in the 85th minute. In the end, it wasn't enough to equalize.

"You have to congratulate Austria Lustenau, the victory was not undeserved. We were committed, we wanted it, but we were extremely inconsistent. That's why we ultimately lost," concluded Ingolitsch.

Seidl: "It's an attitude thing"

Simon Seidl, who scored to make it 2-3, criticizes the lack of energy from the Graz team.

"Of course, in a game like this, you have many chances that you don't convert. We allowed quite a bit. But I believe you can still win with those chances. However, you lose a game like this if you don't have the right energy and attitude from the start," says Seidl.

The missing energy was not solely due to the triple burden of league, cup, and European cup matches.

"It's an attitude thing. Sure, there are many games, but I believe there's still enough in the tank. You have to make sure you go to your maximum every time so you can win such games."

Sturm was far from its maximum that day in Ländle.
