After nine years in office, the Viennese is said to be on the brink of exiting as Sporting Director of the Austrian Football Association.
What comes as a surprise to many, however, is said to have been foreshadowed for some time. Marc Janko hinted at this on the sidelines of "Sky's" Champions League coverage on Wednesday.
Icy relationship with Rangnick?
As the former ÖFB striker reveals, Schöttel's alleged departure is not exactly coming out of the blue. "If you listen to what's being said behind the scenes, it's not terribly surprising."
The reason? Probably, above all, the relationship with national team coach Ralf Rangnick! It is said that things "didn't really work out" between Schöttel and the German.
Janko reveals: "It's true that for some time now, for all the things that are important to him, Rangnick doesn't do them through Peter, but through other people."
One of those "people" is likely Sebastian Prödl. The head of the ÖFB's youth department is said to be considered a candidate for succession.
