Rybakina ends tennis year as world number one

Elena Rybakina is the world number one in tennis at the end of the year. The Kazakh displaced Aryna Sabalenka from the top position after the US Open.

Kazakh tennis player Elena Rybakina will finish the year as the world number one.

After reaching the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Tokyo, the 27-year-old can no longer be displaced from the top position at year-end.

Sabalenka Dethroned

Rybakina started the year successfully with the title at the Australian Open. She followed up at the US Open, securing her second Grand Slam title of the year. With that, she also took the lead in the world rankings.

Overall, the Kazakh has won four titles in the 2026 calendar year so far. Sabalenka has won three tournaments in this calendar year to date.

Previously, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka had held the top spot for 99 consecutive weeks. The now dethroned world number one is currently approximately 2,000 points behind Rybakina.
