Collapse! Schwärzler eliminated in second US Open qualifying round
The player from Vorarlberg won the first set, but then had little impact.
Joel Schwärzler is eliminated in the second qualifying round of the US Open, losing 6:3, 4:6, 1:6 to Andrea Guerrieri (ATP-187).
The world No. 171 started the first set well; Guerrieri just managed to prevent a break at the first opportunity, which Schwärzler then secured to take a 3:1 lead. The Austrian held onto his advantage to win the set 6:3.
Set two started even better from Schwärzler's perspective - the 20-year-old immediately broke the Italian to take a 1:0 lead. Everything went according to plan until 3:2, but after that, the Austrian Tennis Federation (ÖTV) player conceded two breaks. Although he managed to shorten the gap to 4:5, he then lost his third service game in this set and conceded the 1:1 equalizer.
No Fightback in the Third Set
Schwärzler's negative trend in this match continued into set three. After fifteen minutes, he was already 0:3 down. The Austrian won his own serve to make it 1:3, but that was his only game in the final set, as he lost the subsequent three games.
Schwärzler must therefore continue to wait for his first main draw appearance at a Grand Slam.
