Shortly after retiring: New job for Gael Monfils
Fresh off his retirement from professional tennis, Gael Monfils takes over as captain of the French Davis Cup team. He will be supported by Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet.
Gael Monfils is staying involved in tennis as the new captain of the French Davis Cup team, the national tennis federation announced on Saturday.
The 40-year-old Monfils retired last month. He was one of the most popular figures in the sport among both fans and players.
He had originally planned to end his career at this week's Paris Masters, until news broke that his marriage to Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina had come to an end.
Monfils immensely proud
Monfils reached the Davis Cup final in 2014, scoring France's only point in a 3-1 home defeat against Switzerland by beating Roger Federer.
"It is a matter of immense pride to become captain of the team," Monfils said in a statement. "This blue shirt means so much to me."
February start with new coaching staff
France will launch its next Davis Cup campaign in February. As the federation announced, Monfils will be assisted by former players Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet.
Ten-time champions France last won the Davis Cup in 2017.
