Switzerland rages over referee: "Never experienced such a one-sided game"

Not only Akanji was unhappy with the referee's performance. Coach Yakin is also critical - primarily because of a yellow card against Argentina.

The anger among the Swiss is great after the 1:3 defeat against Argentina in the World Cup quarterfinals.

At the center of criticism: referee Joao Pinheiro and the yellow-red card against Breel Embolo after his dive. (to the video highlights >>>)

Yellow for Argentina - too harsh for Yakin

The Swiss striker's sending off was preceded by a VAR check.

The referee had booked Argentina's Leandro Paredes with a yellow card after an alleged foul in midfield. Only because of this was the VAR review even possible.

During the TV broadcast, it was shown that there might have been a "player mix-up."

That's why the yellow card against Paredes caused incomprehension for head coach Murat Yakin. "The referee must not or should not give a yellow card against the Argentinian in this scene. There is no reason for it, the scene was not malicious or rough or anything like that. Then his own mistake is corrected, and we are punished for it. That is incomprehensible and unfathomable to me," he is quoted by "20Minuten."

Wenn man dann auch noch den Schiedsrichter gegen sich hat, wird es schwierig.

Manuel Akanji

Doubly bitter from the "Nati's" perspective: Just a few minutes earlier, Dan Ndoye had scored the equalizer.

"After the equalizer, we clearly had the momentum on our side. Unfortunately, this was punished by a wrong decision from the referee," says Yakin.

Centre-back Manuel Akanji saw it similarly: "When you also have the referee against you, it becomes difficult."

He is not only referring to the Embolo/Paredes incident. "I have never played a match where it was as one-sided as today. None of their dives were punished. There was no yellow card against them in the first 90 minutes. For Breel's incident, there is then a yellow card."
