Deschamps Criticizes Referee: "Did He Have the Necessary Class?"
While the official wasn't blamed for the exit, the performance of the referee from El Salvador caused bewilderment for France's coach.
Didier Deschamps' 14-year era as France's national coach will not conclude with a second World Cup title.
After the 0-2 defeat to Spain in the semi-final, the departing head coach expressed self-critical words ("we have failed, it was simply not enough today">>>), but he didn't limit his criticism solely to his team's performance.
Referee Iván Barton also received a remark: "I am asking the question and will not answer it myself, and I don't want to come across as a whiner: But did the referee have the level to officiate a World Cup semi-final?", said Deschamps at the post-match press conference.
It's not the penalty after Lucas Digne's foul on Lamine Yamal, which led to the 0-1, that is the subject of criticism. "It's an accumulation of situations, some also in our favour," Deschamps said.
