"Not mature enough": World champion lashes out at Nagelsmann
The former DFB defender cites differences in opinion between coach and players as the reason for the failure. "A bit of experience" was missing.
With the World Cup exit in the round of 16 against Paraguay, Julian Nagelsmann's tenure as DFB coach also came to an end.
After the unfortunate elimination at the home European Championship, the second major tournament under his leadership brought great disappointment.
For Guido Buchwald, 1990 World Champion, the separation from the 38-year-old after almost three years is the "logical consequence".
Buchwald criticizes "external communication"
He attributes the failure to the leadership style of the former Bayern coach.
"For me, Nagelsmann had lost the team in the end - also due to his external communication. He acted very unhappily there. There were some issues beforehand, such as the discussion about Neuer or Undav. In addition, there were statements after games that did not always align with the players' perception," said the former defender in his assessment on "Sport1".
The differing views of players and coach particularly struck Guido Buchwald negatively: "The players said it was a mental issue because they had already felt too confident after two wins. Nagelsmann, however, declared it was not a mental issue. If there are different opinions between the coach and key players, and these also become publicly visible, a coach eventually loses the dressing room."
Conclusion: "Nagelsmann achieved none of his goals"
The conclusion on Julian Nagelsmann's tenure is sobering.
"I simply believe that he still lacked a bit of experience for the role of national coach. Nagelsmann simply wasn't mature enough for a national team," was the 65-year-old's assessment.
"A national coach must also communicate excellently externally and present the team as a unit," Nagelsmann simply failed to do that.
What remains of the youngest DFB head coach's tenure? "Two years ago, after the disappointing home European Championship, he himself set the goal of wanting to become world champion. Therefore, one must say: Nagelsmann achieved none of his goals. Of course, there is never just one single reason for failure. It's usually many small pieces of the puzzle that come together," said the VfB Stuttgart legend.
