Turkey: Head of Referees Ordered into Pre-trial Detention
He is accused of extensive offenses. League operations are also affected.
Turkish football is currently unable to escape its crisis.
After it recently emerged that almost 450 officials from the top leagues were banned, the chairman of the Central Refereeing Committee, Ferhat Gündogu, has now been taken into pre-trial detention.
This was reported by the Turkish news agency "Anadolu" in agreement with the agency "AFP".
Arrested on Tuesday, now in Pre-trial Detention
Gündogu was already arrested on Tuesday during house searches. On Saturday, an Istanbul court finally ordered his pre-trial detention.
It remains unclear whether the case is related to the betting scandal that rocked Turkish football last year.
League Operations Also Affected
The competent department of the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating on suspicion of document forgery, breach of trust, and unlawful acquisition of personal data.
According to Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gürlek, the case concerns possible influence on the assignment, evaluation, classification, and appointment of referees, as well as rule examinations.
Gündogu's arrest also affects league operations. The Turkish Football Federation has not yet commented on who will appoint the referees for the upcoming matches next week.
