U-turn! Memphis Depay Remains in Brazil After All
The Dutch international extends his contract in Sao Paulo. Previously, the club had already confirmed the offensive star's departure.
The situation surrounding Memphis Depay at Brazilian top-flight club Corinthians takes yet another turn.
After the club had initially reported that it could not afford a contract extension with the 32-year-old, the parties have now reunited after all.
As the São Paulo club announced on Wednesday, Depay has extended his contract until 2028. According to media reports, the Dutchman is accepting significant salary cuts for this.
"First, I want to thank everyone involved in the contract extension. Corinthians is, of course, a giant. I have seen – and everyone has seen – how big this club is. How great we are together. I can't wait to get back to work. We still have so much worth fighting for. I am very happy," Depay is quoted on his club's website.
"Negotiations End in the Best Possible Way"
"They were long negotiations, but they ended in the best possible way – both for Corinthians and for Memphis, whom I thank very much for his great commitment to wanting to stay. We are very pleased with the extension and are ready for the upcoming challenges," said Corinthians President Osmar Stabile.
Depay moved to Brazil on a free transfer in the summer of 2024, where he contributed 20 goals and 15 assists in 79 competitive matches for the São Paulo-based club.
With the club, he won both the Campeonato Paulista and the Copa do Brasil in 2025. In 2026, another title followed with the Supercopa Rei.
