ÖFB instead of DFB: Why Paul Wanner chose Austria

Paul Wanner made his debut for the Austrian national team in March.

Previously, he had played for several of Germany's youth national teams, but the attacking player ultimately opted for the ÖFB team.

In the "kicker meets DAZN" podcast, Wanner talks about the reasons behind his decision. He stated that the upcoming World Cup was not the decisive factor for him.

"Many people also said he's only deciding now because a World Cup is approaching, but I believe in such a situation, you shouldn't pay attention to something like that at all. It's a matter of the heart – where do you prefer to play," Wanner says.

He had an open exchange with both national team coaches. However, Wanner ultimately based his decision on his own feelings: "This is a decision where you have to listen to yourself."

"I chose Austria because I feel more drawn to it. I'm absolutely glad I did it this way. I can say that it was the right decision."

Number 10 or Number 8?

At his parent club PSV, Wanner is now being deployed in a slightly deeper role than originally planned.

"I arrived as a number 10, but the coach has used me almost exclusively in the number 8 or number 6 position. And I must say, I really like it."

Wanner sees his versatility in midfield as an advantage: "Being able to play any position in the center is, of course, very good."
