The discussion surrounding a new national stadium in Austria is entering its next phase. ÖFB President Josef Pröll is now calling for more speed in the implementation of a modern multi-purpose arena.

In an interview with "Presse", the 57-year-old emphasized the importance of contemporary infrastructure after his impressions from the World Cup in the USA: "Fortunately, Chancellor Christian Stocker and Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler were in the USA and naturally brought back impressions from the stadiums."

For Pröll, it's clear: Austria must intensify its efforts. "We have discussed the issue, and I will push it forward with the national coach, other associations, and concert promoters. I want us to pick up the pace!"

"Austria needs a multi-functional arena"

The demand for a new stadium is not new. ÖFB national coach Ralf Rangnick has also repeatedly advocated for a modern home for the national team in the past. The Ernst-Happel-Stadion is now considered outdated and, according to critics, no longer meets the requirements of modern sports.

Pröll sees a new arena not only as an advantage for football but for Austria as a sporting nation as a whole: "One clearly sees what infrastructure brings to people and how it can elevate sports to a new level."

Politics still called upon

The construction of a multi-purpose arena, which could also serve as a national stadium, has so far failed primarily due to political hurdles. Pröll now wants to inject new momentum into the discussion.

"Austria must develop into a sporting nation. This requires infrastructure, but also ideas for physical activity for children," explains the ÖFB President.
