Ireland is therefore resorting to an unusual solution: Jimmy Dunne, a defender for Queens Park Rangers, will be registered as the third goalkeeper.

However, as long as first-choice goalkeeper Kelleher and reserve O'Leary do not get injured or receive a red card, Dunne should be spared an appearance between the posts.
