Windfall for Freiburg: Manzambi signs in England
The 20-year-old had a phenomenal last season. Now he's off to the Premier League. Manzambi breaks three transfer records with this move.
Johan Manzambi is leaving SC Freiburg and joining Aston Villa.
Both clubs announced this on Friday evening. The 20-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the Premier League club, his new employer confirmed.
According to English media reports, a hefty 60 million euros will be paid in transfer fees. With bonuses, the amount could even increase by another ten million.
Triple Transfer Record
This makes him a record transfer in three ways: No club has ever paid more for a Swiss player, Aston Villa has never spent such a sum on a player before, and SC Freiburg has never received a transfer fee of this magnitude either.
The previous record transfers for the Breisgau club were Kevin Schade and Merlin Röhl, who were sold to Brentford and Everton, respectively, for 25 million euros each in the last two years.
For a long time, it looked as though Manzambi would move to Newcastle United, before Aston Villa thwarted the "Magpies" just before the finish line.
