Lack of Penetration

Centre-back Paul Koller didn't want to over-dramatize the problems in the final third, but still saw room for improvement: "I don't think we played that badly. We had good ball recoveries and transition moments. In the final third, we need to be tidier and more decisive."

Ingolitsch himself tried a lot against Rapid to counteract this issue, making early substitutions with Balbo, Mamageishvili, and Weiper. In the end, it still wasn't enough.

"It was a 50/50 game. We simply couldn't capitalize on the decisive moments and then handed them to the opponent. That's how you lose the game. But it was also clear that we wouldn't be highly dominant against Rapid," said Ingolitsch.

For Sturm, the match against Rapid was the kickoff for exciting weeks. On Saturday, they head to Voitsberg for the Cup, before LASK (Sep 13) and Stade Rennes (Sep 16) visit Liebenau within three days.

The week concludes with the away blockbuster in Salzburg (Sep 20). By then, especially offensively, more penetration will be needed.
