When the international elite serves up at the French Open next early summer, Roland Garros will once again become the center of the tennis world.

For the 126th time, the Coupe des Mousquetaires and the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen will be contested on the world's most famous clay court.

The tournament is held on 18 courts - the centerpiece is Centre Court (Philippe-Chatrier) with around 15,000 seats and a retractable roof.

Magical Night Sessions: Experience Roland Garros on the Parisian Clay

What makes the venue globally unique is its legendary surface: the "terre battue". Contrary to popular belief, it is not ordinary sand.

The surface at the French Open is a layered foundation of limestone and gravel with a wafer-thin layer of fine, red dust - the brick dust, which gives the surface its unmistakable character.

In recent years, Night Sessions have also become another highlight. When Court Philippe-Chatrier transforms into a grand stage under the floodlights and every point is celebrated by thousands of fans, Roland Garros unfolds its full magic.

However, Roland Garros is also the scene of numerous Austrian moments of glory. The first occurred in 1995 when Thomas Muster won the tournament. With his final victory over Michael Chang, the "King of Clay" crowned his incredible spring season on the red dirt - remaining undefeated on the surface for 40 consecutive matches.

Fifteen years later, Jürgen Melzer took center stage. The then 29-year-old fought his way to the semi-finals - the highlight being his quarter-final victory over Novak Djokovic after coming back from two sets down.

In women's singles, however, successes are rarer. But ÖTV youngster Lilli Tagger will make her mark on the big stage for the first time in 2025 with her junior triumph.

French Open: Thiem and the Phenomenon Rafael Nadal

Dominic Thiem also captivated at the French Open. From 2016 to 2019, the Lower Austrian reached the semi-finals four times in a row and made it to the final twice, in both 2018 and 2019 - but there he had to bow to the undisputed King of Roland Garros.

Rafael Nadal turned the courts in the 16th arrondissement of Paris into his personal living room: The exceptional clay-court player reached the final no less than 14 times and won the tournament just as often.

From 2005 until his last title in 2022, the Spaniard achieved an incredible 112 wins with only four losses. Even during his career, the organizers erected a statue in Nadal's honor.

With Nadal's retirement, other players have come to the fore in recent years. Alongside the perennial Novak Djokovic, who won the tournament in 2023, the new star generation has arrived with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

The Spaniard won the tournament in 2024 and 2025, while the South Tyrolean - finalist in 2025 - has yet to claim the title at Roland Garros.

At the most recent edition, Alexander Zverev also clinched his long-awaited first Grand Slam title, after being defeated by Alcaraz in the 2024 final. The German immediately followed that up with his second at the US Open.
